New study shows that alcohol drinkers are more physically active as compared to abstainers.

New York City- People who engage regularly in alcohol drinking sessions are found out to be more active than teetotalers, and those who drink more than the average alcoholic drink per day me be the most active, according to a recent study.

Using the information gathered from a U.S. government health survey for adults, researchers have found out that in general, people who have devoted their time to exercise tended to increase along with the number of alcoholic beverages they had per month.

As compared to non alcoholic drinkers, those who are considered drunkards, or have had 46 drinks in the past month for women and 76 or more for men-have worked out in an average of 20 minutes more each week.

Moderate drinkers on the other hand, those who drink around 15-45 drinks for women and 30 to 75 drinks for men in a month, achieve around 10 minutes of exercise each week.

Both heavy and moderate drinkers are also likely to provide vigorous exercise, such as jogging, says the report in the American Journal of Health Promotion. As compared to non-drinkers, researchers, adults in the said groups were about 14 percent more likely to say that they practiced rigorous exercise in a typical week.

“We certainly would not advocate that abstainers should start drinking or light drinkers shold begin drinking heavily as a way to increase their exercise,” says lead researcher Dr. Michael T. French of the University of Miami.

However, he also added that drinking is an activity “worth exploring further.”

According to French, one potential reason for the said link is that some regular drinkers use exercise as a way to hinder the calories from alcohol to set into the body. It is also possible that drinking at “responsible” levels is a good way to a generally healthy lifestyle, the researcher said.

Moderate drinking meanwhile is also linked to other potential health benefits, such as lesser risk of heart disease. Higher exercise levels plus alcohol may promote certain advantages as well, such as elevated levels of good cholesterol.
