Exposing the Vicious Wonders of Anabolic Steroids

In the world of athletics and bodybuilding, it is impossible for you not to encounter the word “steroids”. While it is illegal to take steroids, a lot of people engaged in sports and bodybuilding take the said drug to build muscle. Yes, steroids can be considered a wonder drug as it fulfills the dreams and ambition of avid bodybuilding fans (it has the ability to build muscle fast), but it also provides a stream of side effects which you would not want to suffer from.

But what exactly are steroids?

Steroids are synthetic forms of testosterone, the male hormone found in the body. Testosterone is the main hormone that builds muscle mass, and along with the muscle are strength and energy.  Steroids are initially developed for medical purposes, but upon learning its massive bodybuilding capacities, people in the world of sports and athletics soon got hold of the supplement as their wonder drug.

There was a time when steroids are sold in the market legally, and they were sold like hotcakes. Even those who are not into bodybuilding took the supplements, as they wanted to get a good body figure without exerting too much effort.

Steroids however, should be taken only under medical advice. There are men who actually lack the adequate supply of steroids in the body due to hormonal imbalance or chronic illnesses such as cancer. The problem is, steroids are packaged as a “bodybuilding drug,” and only a bodybuilding drug.

As mentioned earlier, steroids provide a stream of side effects which you wouldn’t want to happen to you. These are:

1.       Tendon damage. Since muscle power is increased rapidly to disproportionate levels, tendon strength is exerted to its fullest potential, which in turn weakens the tendons, especially during increased muscle activity. This usually results to tendon rupture, such as the tearing of the Achilles tendon.

2.       Hypertension. Regular consumption of steroids make the body retain salt and fluids, and because of this the fluids which were supposed to be flushed away get into the bloodstream, boosting up blood pressure. Steroids also create an imbalance between good and bad cholesterol in the body, leaving the bad to dominate.  Because of increased blood pressure, the blood vessels narrow, which can lead to heart disease and stroke.

3.       Increased thrombosis. Steroids also have the ability to boos the number of platelets in the blood, thus resulting to thick, sticky blood which can block the blood vessels.

4.       Liver damage. Steroid abuse can harm the liver, by retaining the bile inside the liver. This suppression results to a damaged liver, or in this case jaundice.

5.       Infertility. Since steroids push testosterone to the limit, you run out of natural testosterone in the body. Steroids also pull down one’s libido.
