Hunger Hormone is Caused by Fat, Not Stomach
We have always believed that we feel hunger because our stomach says so. Or in a more scientific sense, the stomach produces the hunger hormone ghrelin, the hormone that tells our brains that we’re already hungry.
In a study done by the University of Cincinannti, ghrelin is actually generated by fats from the food we eat, and not the fats our body develops. Ghrelin works to slow down the metabolism process, thus we feel hungry after a short period of time.
In the study, ghrelin not only promotes hunger in the stomach, mainly because it was believed to accumulate during periods of time. Prior to this, ghrelin is already present in the food we are about to eat, and once we consume them, the fats become stored in our body. And once the fats are consumed by the body, ghrelin meanwhile is produced and tells the brain that you are hungry.
Ghrelin is unique because it requires acylation, or the addition of another fatty acid using another enzyme, called ghrellin O-activiation that could be targeted again.
According to the head of the research, Matthias Tschöp, MD, the fatty acids needed to produce ghrelin are the same fats found in ingested dietary fats. Ghrelin not merely informs the brain about hunger-it actually serves as a lipid sensor in the stomach and tells the brain when calories become available.
Tschöp used mice as models for his group’s experiment. What the team did was to feed the mice with lipid rich diet, with one group expressing the GOAT enzyme, while other living a normal life. After days of observation and monitoring, Tschöp and shit team found out that:
“When exposed to certain fatty foods, mice with more GOAT gain more fat,” says Tschöp. “The mice meanwhile without GOAT gain less because the brain no longer receives the ‘fats are here, store them’ signal.”
The study could not be tested on humans, sadly. However, the study opened doors to newer studies indicate that during fasting, active ghrellin are flat, but when fat is beginning to be derived out of the consumed food, ghrellin becomes active in the body.
So, is controlling the presence of ghrelin a good way losing weight?
The answer is yes. Since its consumed fat that increases the levels of ghrelin, one can then go on a low-fat diet in order to make use of the enzyme as part of his weight loss career. Reducing the levels of consumed fat in the body also lowers the levels of ghrelin activity, and through this the brain is not informed about hunger-resulting to controlled meals and consistent weight loss.
